On Saturday March 10th over 200 walkers and volunteers gathered for a good cause. The 2012 ‘Light up the Night’ beach walk raised nearly CI$6,000 towards the Breast Cancer Foundation, benefiting local efforts of the Lions Club of Tropical Gardens and the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
Walkers donned glowing t-shirts for the event that set off from Royal Palms to The Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman and back again, on a lovely brisk beach walk attended by all ages.
At the end of the course participants lit off biodegradable wish lanterns into the sky honouring loved ones who have battled this challenging disease.
“Once again the community came together and helped to make this a successful event.” Said Janet Jarchow of the Breast Cancer Foundation. “The wish lanterns gave purpose to the walk. It was incredibly moving and powerful to feel the spirit, stories and emotions with the lift off of each lantern. We are thankful to everyone who contributed, enabling us to assist the community in the fight against breast cancer.”
In addition to the annual beach walk The Breast Cancer Foundation also hosts The Breast Cancer Gala, which is among the most anticipated black tie events of the year, including tremendous guest speakers, auctions and entertainment. The Gala will take place on Saturday October 13th, 2012 at The Ritz-Carlton. Contributions and donations to the Foundation are also gratefully accepted year round.
The main goals of The Breast Cancer Foundation aim to raise awareness about breast cancer in the community, ensure the importance and education of early detection, as well as provide the necessary access to the care that might be required by a breast cancer patient. Our local survivors are proof that we can overcome this battle with breast cancer and win. The funds raised at events such as ‘Light up the night beach walk’ take us one step closer to overcoming this fight.
The Breast Cancer Foundation would like to thank event sponsors Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital, Caymanian Compass, RE/MAX Cayman Islands, Royal Palms and The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman, in addition to all event volunteers who helped make the event a success.
