The Breast Cancer Foundation is thrilled to announce that the 2023 Gala successfully raised in excess of $500,000, marking a significant milestone in the fight against breast cancer in the Cayman Islands. The funds raised will be instrumental in supporting patients, promoting awareness and the importance of early detection. All funds are used locally to help our Cayman Islands residents.
This year’s gala was graced by the presence of Mathew Knowles, father of Beyonce and Solange, who delivered an inspiring speech that resonated with every attendee. Knowles, a breast cancer survivor himself, shared his personal journey and insights, emphasizing the importance of early detection, research, and community support in overcoming the disease.
“I cannot thank our extremely generous community enough for its overwhelming support at this year’s Breast Cancer Gala,” added Kim Lund, Breast Cancer Foundation Founder and Director. “As the key fundraising event for the Breast Cancer Foundation, the Gala, over the last 14 years, has generated millions of dollars for breast cancer patients in the Cayman Islands, as well as promoting awareness and the need for early detection among our community.”
“Breast cancer doesn’t just affect women which was highlighted at this year’s Gala,” added James Bovell, Breast Cancer Foundation Founder and Director. “It was an honour to host Matthew Knowles as our guest speaker and to hear his particular experience.”
The Foundation also used the event to announce that Her Excellency, the Governor, has graciously accepted the role of Patron for the Breast Cancer Foundation. The Governor’s commitment to this cause underscores the importance of collective effort and leadership in addressing the challenges posed by breast cancer.
Under the Governor’s patronage, the Foundation is poised to amplify its impact, reaching more individuals and communities than ever. “I am very proud to be the new patron of the Breast Cancer Foundation in the Cayman Islands and to champion its support services and awareness programmes that help to improve the lives of people affected by the disease,” added Governor Jane Owen.
The 2023 Breast Cancer Gala was a testament to the power of unity and compassion. Attendees, sponsors, and partners came together in a spectacular fashion, contributing generously and reaffirming their commitment to eradicating breast cancer. Every dollar raised is a step closer to a world where no one has to face the devastating impact of this disease.
New Chief Administrator, Beverly Edgington, in her speech, highlighted how the Foundation has grown over the last 15 years and launched the yearlong anniversary campaign, with the ultimate goal of creating a future where breast cancer is no longer a threat to the women and men of the Cayman Islands. “In October 2024 we plan to paint the island pink in celebration,” added Beverly Edgington, Chief Administrator.
The Breast Cancer Foundation extends its heartfelt gratitude to all who made this event a resounding success. Together, we are not just raising funds; we are raising hope, fostering innovation, and building a future where breast cancer is a thing of the past.
