Q&A with Dr. Ginny Hobday, Medical Advisor, the Breast Cancer Foundation.
What is your role at the Breast Cancer Foundation?
I am the medical advisor to the Breast Cancer Foundation and their board.
How many years have you been our Medical Advisor?
Not long after the foundation was founded, nearly 15 years ago.
Why is early detection important?
Early detection is so important because it literally saves lives. Cancers caught before you can feel them, like on a routine mammogram can pick up cancer years before it is a lump. Treatment is most effective when the cancer is localised and small.
People with a family history may need to start screening earlier. They should self-examine regularly.
What are the most identified signs and symptoms?
Signs and symptoms are any lump, pain, nipple discharge, or change in skin or shape of the breast.
What should one do if they notice signs and symptoms?
People who self-check will pick up lumps earlier than people who do not. The most common symptom is a breast lump or pain and this should always be checked by a Doctor.
If someone is diagnosed with breast cancer, why should they visit the BCF?
People who are diagnosed with breast cancer should contact BCF. There is amazing support, information, and help. Talking to others who have been through it really helps. The ladies advise on every aspect of care and can provide post-surgery bras, and wigs if needed.
They support people going through chemotherapy and have a group of dedicated volunteers.
I refer every patient I meet with breast cancer to the Foundation.
