Father’s Day Spotlight

Andy Croft, Husband, Father and BCF Volunteer and Supporter

While only the woman may be physically affected by the cancer her spouse or partner will be touched by the disease as well.  Here at the Breast Cancer Foundation, we want all partners to know that if they want to talk, we’ll be there to listen.  There are many ways that a partner can offer support during treatment – words, actions, and just being there – all things we have witnessed with Andy, the husband we are spotlighting today.  A partner can take an active role in being an advocate, asking questions, keeping track of medication.

With Andy he spends time with the children, partaking in their activities so that Tori can spend time healing herself.  A partner can act as an emotional anchor, encouraging, listening without judging and empathising.  Andy has been an advocate for the cold-capping process, helping the foundation bring in the first machines and training how to cold-cap so that he could be an integral part of Tori’s journey.

Andy has also, very bravely, stood up in front of 650 people at our annual gala, to tell those listening just what it is like.  Thank you, Andy, for the support you not only gave Tori but how you support the Foundation too.

1. Life can change in an instant.

When was your wife/partner diagnosed with Breast Cancer?

My wife’s initial stage 2 diagnosis was in December 2015, and her stage 4 diagnosis was in March 2017.

2. Communication is key.

Any advice for other Husbands when their wife is diagnosed?

Don’t try to fix it, the heart-breaking thing is you can’t no matter how much you want to, so spend the energy and effort in the moment. Not something I am very good at.

3. Spousal support comes first.

Can you tell us about caregiving during your wife’s breast cancer journey?

It’s a roller coaster of emotions and experiences.  Can make you smile, laugh, scream with excitement and with fear. Remember Self Care, surprisingly easy to forget.

4. Community support.

How has BCF’s Wellness Program (counselling and support groups) helped you and your family?

Gave me time to recoup, learn, and breathe. Priceless.

5. Lemonade from Lemons.

Do you appreciate some things more since supporting your Wife through her breast cancer journey?

Yes, the power of a few genuine people trying to do good. But mainly the precious simple time with family.
